Foolish to acknowledge God?
Romans 1:28-32 NLT
Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.
Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.
They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.
They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.
Reflection . . .
Ok, let’s review a little bit! The first half of chapter one of Romans has to do with Paul establishing the reason why it is important to understand that the Good News is about responding to God in faith. The second half of chapter one has to do with the problem we as humans face:
- What or whom we are going to worship
- Our identity as human beings.
Verse 28 sets us up for what’s next. Those who refuse to worship God and find their identity in Him think it is foolish to acknowledge God, so they follow their own foolish thinking and do things that should not be done. A long list of sinful behaviors describes the kind of people who refuse to worship God and find their identity in Him.
Interestingly enough, Paul adds in the final verse that “They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die.” Harsh! You may say? First, people usually want love without justice and God who is perfect, cannot separate His perfect love from His perfect justice, so there are always consequences for sin and its acts. Second, there is a human instinctive knowing that punishment is a requirement in God’s realm. Refusing to acknowledge God or His requirement for justice leads to an even greater perversion of the sins they condone. What is further to the sins they commit, is that they encourage others to do them too! These things are not new to our society, they are just repackaged.
Those who refuse to honour God in their worship and identity find themselves headlong into this list of sinful activities. They are the consequences of their foolish thinking and a refusal to acknowledge God.
But we, we honor God by giving Him our hearts.
