What if …

Psalm 124:1-8 NLT

[1] What if the LORD had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat:

[2] What if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us?

[3] They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger.

[4] The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us.

[5] Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives.

[6] Praise the LORD, who did not let their teeth tear us apart!

[7] We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free!

[8] Our help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Reflection …

What if the Lord was not for us? Where would we be and what would have become of our lives? These are the questions being posed by the Psalmist. The answer is an obvious one for the first hearers who were much closer to the events described in these verses. For us who don’t readily identify with the imagery listed here, it’s a bit more difficult to see God’s hand of help right away.

Let’s pause to imagine what would have happened to us in particular circumstances of life if the Lord had not been our help.

  • Protection from people’s anger
  • Protection from natural disasters/uncontrollable situations or events
  • Protection from becoming overwhelmed by other people
  • Protection of our very lives
