Into Practice …

Zion City …

Psalm 48:1-3 NLT

How great is the LORD, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain!

It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King!

God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender.

Reflection …

Psalm 48 doesn’t receive much attention because it is not well understood. What is Zion? Where is it, and what’s the importance of it for us?

Zion is a metaphor for the city of God, God’s dwelling place. It’s identified as Mount Zion and also Jerusalem. Mount Zion has references to the mountain where God gave the 10 Commandments, the manifestation of His very presence, yet not accessible to the people except through God’s chosen leaders. Jerusalem refers to the actual City where the king reigned and was where the Temple was established for worship. Jerusalem is also referred to as the city of the new creation. With all these references and meanings of Zion City, we understand that it is a place of God’s presence and the place we anticipate being with the Lord in our heavenly home.

What does that mean for us now? It gives us hope for the future in that being part of God’s story and salvation plan is more than our meager existence on this earth. That God himself is defending Zion City is hope reassured!
