He will make it possible …
Isaiah 53:10-12 NLT
But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands.
When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.
I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.
This passage speaks of what God would accomplish through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for us. What would He accomplish through His anguish and experience?
He would make it possible for many to be counted righteous before God!
This truth is essential for us to understand our real need. Our desperate need since the Fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden has been to be restored to relationship with God. Sin has broken that relationship; it has separated us from God.
Why is sacrifice necessary for the forgiveness of sins?
Sacrifice is essential in order for us to experience freedom. If we think about something simple like saving money, we need to sacrifice spending money (the felt need to have or do something) in order to save the money, not be enslaved to it and put the felt need aside. There is always something that needs to be sacrificed in order to experience freedom from being enslaved to it. Those who have been caught up in addictive behaviors know this well. They need to be freed from the addiction and most often need someone (who also acts sacrificially) to help them make the sacrifice necessary to become free from that addiction.
In the case of sin, we are unable to ultimately deal with it on our own and so we need Jesus who made the ultimate sacrifice for sin to bring us to experience freedom from it and make us right before God.
