Reflecting on God’s Word …

Don’t be Afraid

Revelation 2:8-11 NLT

[8] “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna. This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive:

[9] “I know about your suffering and your poverty-but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan.

[10] Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.

[11] “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.

Reflection

These are words of warning, and at the same time words of encouragement!

John’s letter to the church in Smyrna is Jesus’ words to that church. Jesus is saying that they have come through difficult times and they are going to go through difficult times. He says, “Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer!” Even today, many are going to oppose us because of our beliefs and what we stand for. He goes on to say that there will be a reward for those who remain faithful even when facing death — the crown of life!

We have so much to look forward to in the life to come. This life here on earth has so many trials, problems and difficulties and often even more for those whose faith is in the Lord.

Take it to heart! Do not be afraid! We have so much more to look forward to! Our hope is in the Lord, not in the things or people of this world!
