God’s Protection . . .
Psalm 17:6-8 NLT
I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray.
Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies.
Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Reflection . . .
In verse 8 David uses two images in requesting protection from the Lord:
- To Guard – a guard stands watch, pays attention to what is happening and sends notice as soon as something is not as it should be. David is asking the Lord to do just that — stand guard and let him know as soon as trouble is near.
- To Hide – the image here is one of a mother bird who protects her chicks under her wings. They find safety, protection, warmth and peace that under even the shadow of her wings there is safety because they are close enough to be protected from anything that might cause harm
What beautiful imagery the Psalmist (David) uses to help us understand God’s loving care and protection of His own. No matter where we are, what we’ve done, we can run to the Lord for strength, protection — all that we need!
