God who searches hearts . . .
Jeremiah 17:5-10 NLT
This is what the LORD says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land.
“But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”
Reflection . . .
Similar to Psalm 1, this passage reflects on and contrasts those who do not trust in the Lord with those who do. Two things stand out in the last section that are important for us to note.
- The human heart is the most deceitful of all things
- The Lord examines all hearts and motives
Is the human heart really that wicked? Well, without the transforming work of the Lord, yes it has the tendency to always choose deceit and wickedness!
Praise the Lord we have the Good News of the gospel, the work of Jesus Christ and the salvation He alone can give to change that! Does God still search hearts? Absolutely! Do we still tend toward deceitfulness and wickedness? We do if we are not kept in check before the Lord and among our fellow believers.
It’s important for us to come before the Lord in humbleness of heart and offer ourselves to him afresh — regularly, daily! Give Him thanks for the work He is doing in your life and those around you. Ask for cleansing, healing, refreshment and the transformation He desires!
