Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

That you may know . . .

1 John 5:13-15 NLT

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

Reflection . . .

Knowing is important. It affirms something in us. What was it that John was writing to them?

John was reminding his readers (us included) that eternal life is about faith in Jesus Christ. All of the verses at the beginning of chapter five point to this reality. In the time when John was writing this letter, there were many who were debating and arguing that eternal life was something else, more than just faith in Jesus, that faith required good works or some other rituals to be authentic. John fervently encourages and reminds us that eternal life is all about faith in Jesus Christ God’s Son.

As much as contemporary writers of history, philosophies, and other beliefs want to erase the events of Jesus birth, life, death and resurrection, these truths will continue throughout the coming generations!

To know Jesus Christ is to have eternal life!

To have that assurance is a wonderful blessing and joy in facing every day!
