Reflecting on God’s Word …

Something unexpected!

Luke 1:57-64 NLT

When it was time for Elizabeth’s baby to be born, she gave birth to a son. And when her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had been very merciful to her, everyone rejoiced with her. When the baby was eight days old, they all came for the circumcision ceremony. They wanted to name him Zechariah, after his father. But Elizabeth said, “No! His name is John!” “What?” they exclaimed. “There is no one in all your family by that name.” So they used gestures to ask the baby’s father what he wanted to name him. He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s surprise he wrote, “His name is John.” Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God.

John the Baptist was born! His parents experienced something rather unexpected during the whole pregnancy period with Zechariah not being able to speak because of his unbelief. And then, he could speak because the promise of a son was fulfilled with John’s birth. What an interesting story! God keeps his promises even when we don’t have the faith to believe it!

Zechariah was a priest, someone you’d think should have had faith enough to believe. What are you waiting on God for? Are you having faith to believe that He can bring you through it, or to it?

God keeps His promises and will fulfill what He has given to us through His Word. Let’s take a fe moments to pray the words of this song (video below):

Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
To receive the food of Your Holy Word
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness

That the light of Christ might be seen today
In our acts of love and our deeds of faith
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
All Your purposes for Your glory

Teach us Lord, full obedience
Holy reverence, true humility
Test our thoughts and our attitudes
In the radiance of Your purity

Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see
Your majestic love and authority
Words of pow’r that can never fail
Let their truth prevail over unbelief

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds
Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
That will echo down through eternity

And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises
And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us
Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built
And the earth is filled with Your glory
