A Sign from God

Luke 11:29-30 NLT

As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, “This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God.

Reflection . . .

What is a sign? What is the sign of Jonah?

A sign is something that points us to a place or something that is about to happen.

The sign of Jonah pointed to what was going to be given to the people Jesus was talking to. The prophet Jonah spent 3 days/nights in the belly of the big fish — remember the story!? Jonah was sent to the people of Nineveh to proclaim the message of God, to repent of their sins and turn to him. Now, a sign is not a complete explanation of the story, it just indicates the direction in which things are going. In the same way that Jonah spent 3 days/nights in the belly of the big fish, so Jesus would face the reality of death in order to conquer it and bring God’s message of salvation to the world — He rose from the dead after 3 days.

This sign of 3 days would have been well known by the Jewish people from the writings of the prophets, and they would have easily made that connection to Jesus as a prophet, the Messiah!
