Reflecting on God’s Word …

Matthew 5:13-16 NLT
[13] “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

[14] “You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

[15] No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

[16] In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

We are salt! We are light!

We are to be effective in this world bringing flavor to the tasteless and insight to the confusion. Salt and light are to be received and shared not refused or withheld.

Our good deeds are for God’s glory! Whether they are seen by others or not, whether people know it’s us who have been involved or not, the purpose of the good things we do is to give glory to God! So that others give glory to God too!

We have been created for the purpose of doing good things so let’s accept that purpose or “calling” and get to it!

People often think that good deeds are what make them good people. Certainly they reflect what is really in our hearts (which can be selfish too!), but it’s only through Jesus Christ that we are made acceptable or good before God (John 14:6, Eph. 2:8-10).

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
