James 4:13-17 NLT
Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”
How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”
Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.
Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
Reflection . . .
These verse follow the passage we looked at yesterday about Humbling ourselves before God. Here, it’s saying the same thing only in a way that is more practical.
We submit ourselves to the Lord for what He wants to do in and through us each day, not what we want or what we can accomplish on our own and for our own personal gain!
We must submit our plans to the Lord to receive His blessing and know if they really are what He wants for us to be involved in. Verse 17 is so often taken out of context.
Here in this passage, the context is:
Being humble before the Lord and submitting our way/plans to Him.
So, in that context verse 17 means that, if we know we are supposed to be humble before God, resist the devil, submit ourselves and our plans before the Lord, and we know that’s what we are supposed to do, then that is sin!
