Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

Ecclesiastes 1:2-8 NLT
[2] “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”

[3] What do people get for all their hard work under the sun?

[4] Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes.

[5] The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again.

[6] The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles.

[7] Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea.

[8] Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.

Reflection . . .

This passage doesn’t seem all that encouraging at first glance. Everything is meaningless! Well, it does give us a reality check!

Verse 8 says that we will never be satisfied with the things of this world.

How spot on is that??!!

We need to realize that this world can only offer us created things or things that are human crafted. Those things will never satisfy us, we’ll always be left wanting. This passage is certainly a reality check that can hit us hard. Everything we work for, everything we know that is concrete, tangible and knowable — it’s where we live, breathe and exist.

There is an unseen world that is far superior! It’s the spiritual world, things unseen, things that are mysterious and even dangerous. God is Spirit and we are spiritual beings too! While we have to live in this world and fulfill God’s purposes for our lives, we need to keep our eyes fixed on the eternal, a perspective beyond the physical realities we live in day by day!

What is God calling you to today?

  • Is there some task or thing you can do encourage someone?
  • What can you be thankful for right now?
  • Who do you need to invest your life in?
  • What is a blessing from God that you are experiencing today?

Take a moment and say aloud your responses to the above questions. It’ll help bring eternal perspective to your day. Then find a way to help someone and help them do the same.
