Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

Hebrews 12:10-13 NLT

[10] For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

[11] No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

[12] So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees.

[13] Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

Reflection . . .

God’s discipline is always good!

Q: What’s His purpose for discipline?

A: For us to share in His holiness!

Of course, no one enjoys discipline! It’s hard to take and even harder to give. Discipline is something that is sorely lacking in our society today. Not only in the sense of punishment or suffering the consequence of bad behaviour, but in the sense of developing good habits too.

Discipline is always good! Discipline is always meant to make us stronger and to purify us! He has a purpose for us and for this world. We are the ones he wants to use to demonstrate his glory to the world. He wants to transform us into the likeness of Christ, make us strong in Him.

“In spite of all appearances to the contrary, God has a plan for this bankrupt world. He still has something in store for it. This dark, satanic earth, drowned in blood and tears, this earth of ours, he still wants as a theater for his grace and glorious direction.”

Helmut Thielcke (1908-1986)
