Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

Ephesians 6:10-20 NLT
[10] A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

[11] Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

[12] For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

[13] Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

[14] Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.

[15] For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.

[16] In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.

[17] Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

[18] Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

[19] And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.

[20] I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.

Reflection . . .

Let’s review the pieces of the armor of God which are for the purpose of resisting the enemy and standing firm in the Lord.

Belt of Truth – to be able know the truth and stand your ground in resisting the enemy. The belt holds the whole armor together and is the place where the sword and shield are maintained. We find truth in Jesus Christ who is revealed in God’s Word.

Breastplate of Righteousness (Body Armor) – to know that doing the right thing will protect our most vital parts. The body armor gives security and protection to the core of the body. Doing the right thing protects our hearts and builds strength for our most vital parts.

Shoes of Peace – to be ready to share the Gospel in peace. Sharing the gospel is the essential work we are to be involved in. We are to share it in peace because it brings peace.

Shield of Faith – to be able to stop the attacks of the enemy through faith. We are saved by grace through faith which is what gives us strength and courage to move forward. Faith protects us from attacks and helps defeat/conquer the enemy. We exercise our faith by holding on to it and standing behind it for protection.

Helmet of Salvation – to protect our thinking about salvation from being attacked. We need to protect our thinking and know that our salvation comes through Christ, not by our own strength or by other means.

Sword of the Spirit – to use the Word of God to advance against the enemy and take ground in conquering. We need God’s Word in our lives, to study it, memorize it meditate on it, practice it, know it well so we can use it as the primary means to move ahead in defeating the enemy.
