Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 NLT
[27] All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

[28] Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church:

first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.

[29] Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? [30] Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! [31] So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.

Reflection . . .

Here in this passage we have yet another list of gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to the church. These gifts are to help the church, they are appointed by the Holy Spirit. This list is not exhaustive as we have other gifts included in various places as well, as we noted a few days ago in our study in Ephesians. The list here starts with leadership roles given — apostles, prophets, teachers. These people are to lead the church and equip the church for ministry. They are not to be doing all the ministry in the church. Then, gifts of healing, helps, leadership, unknown languages are for serving in the Body of Christ. As is mentioned at the end, we are to earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.

So, what is most helpful that you can do in the church? Where can you serve? What can you do that will help someone or your church the most? That’s where you need to ask the Lord to guide you to see if He has gifted you in that area for ministry. He has helped you identify where you can be helpful, so put that before the Lord and ask for His help. Perhaps by asking He’ll show you something else or someone who needs your help.
