Reflecting on God’s Word . . .

Matthew 8:18-22 NLT

[18] When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. [19] Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” [20] But Jesus replied,

“Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

[21] Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” [22] But Jesus told him,

“Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead. ”

Reflection . . .

These are interesting responses Jesus gives to those who want to follow him.

What does he mean by them?

Verse 20 gives us a response saying that Jesus unlike even the wild animals, has no place to sleep. What does that mean for us as his followers?

It means that if we want to follow Jesus the cost will be to give up even our homes and the security of having a place to sleep — our comfort!

Verse 22 gives us the response saying that Jesus wants us to follow him now! We are not to put it off until this or that happens and we have more time and less responsibilities.

Now is the time to follow him, now is the time to leave those things that are keeping us from following him now!
