But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”
Reflection . . .
If we read the verses surrounding these two where Samuel is scolding King Saul and then his response to his disobedience (verses 10-31), we see that his rebellion, stubborness, and disobedience were very much part of his character. In fact, his whole life was characterized by such obstinance.
Sometimes we may think that giving things up, partial obedience, or doing what might be considered the “right thing” in a given situation is honourable and acceptable in God’s eyes. The words of Samuel are wisdom for living, “Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering . . . ” Submitting everything to God and obeying His voice, what He desires for every situation in life certainly may not be the popular thing, the easiest thing, or what even makes any sense at all! It is, however, the best thing!
