Proverbs 10:22 NLT
The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
Reflection . . .
What is blessing?
Are we blessed when we have food on the table? Are we blessed to have a good, healthy family? Are we blessed only to receive good things? What about the bad things that come along, can they be blessings too?
According to Psalm 1, Matthew 5 amoung other passages, being blessed has less to do with how we see blessing these days in our contemporary materialistic society, and everything to do with God working in and through us to change us into the people He wants us to be – meditating on His Word (Psalm 1), blessed are those who … are humble, hungry, mourn, etc. (Matthew 5). It’s about the washing, cleansing, refining, and maturing work of the Holy Spirit in us as believers in Jesus Christ. In this process of what we call Sanctification (maturing in our faith), good things are produced in us like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Then blessing flows in and through us out toward others – that is what makes us rich!
