Reflecting on God’s Word

1 John 1:8-10 NLT
[8] If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. [9] But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. [10] If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

Sin is a tricky thing. These verses help us see ourselves for real. They say, “let’s be honest here, sin is a reality for us all and there’s no escaping it.” Sin is dangerous because if we continue in unconfessed sin, not only do we deceive ourselves, we walk contrary to the truth.

Confessing sin is an essential part of living in the light and walking in God’s Truth. It cleans us from the filth we encounter each day and protects us. It keeps us humble. It focuses our reliance on God who is faithful and just, not on ourselves.
